System requirements
Install in three steps
Just like any other Mac app, with one extra click the first time you open it.
-
1
Open the DMG
Double-click MacClean.dmg in your Downloads folder. A window with MacClean in it appears.
-
2
Drag to Applications
Drag the MacClean icon onto the Applications folder on the right. Once it’s copied, you can eject the DMG.
-
3
Open it the first time
MacClean isn’t notarized by Apple yet, so the first time you open it macOS may say it can’t verify the developer. That’s expected. Open it once as shown below and macOS won’t ask again.
macOS 14: In Applications, hold Control and click MacClean (or right-click), choose Open, then click Open again in the dialog.
-
macOS 15 or later
Newer macOS no longer offers Open in the right-click menu. Double-click MacClean and click Done when warned. Then open System Settings › Privacy & Security, scroll to Security, click Open Anyway next to MacClean and confirm with your password.
You only do this once. If you don’t see Open Anyway, double-click MacClean once more and come back.
Grant Full Disk Access
macOS protects the data folders of apps like Mail and Safari. With access, MacClean can scan them; without it, MacClean still works but some results will be missing.
- Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Full Disk Access
- Turn on the switch next to MacClean (not listed? Click “+” and choose MacClean in Applications)
- Quit and reopen MacClean when asked
The Grant button at the bottom of MacClean’s sidebar takes you straight there.
